Author Interview with EM Denning

Where did you get your start?

In poetry, actually. I’ve written poetry fairly steadily since childhood. I even published poetry under a different name for years, all the while plugging away on one book or another. I wrote in a few different genres while I searched for my niche and tried to develop my voice. Back in 2014 I was talking with an author friend of mine, someone whom I’ve known for a very long time and she told me that I should give erotica a shot. It was something she’d had some success in and she thought it would be a good fit for me.

What inspires you to write?

I just love it. It’s something I’ve always enjoyed doing. I love creating and I love thinking up stories and characters. I love the thrill of taking a small idea and turning it into a whole world.

How old were you when you started writing?

I was in the fourth grade. But if we’re going to talk about when I started writing in a serious fashion, I’d say 2012. My kids weren’t so tiny anymore and I was finding myself with a bit more time to fill. Not a ton, mind you, but enough that I felt like I could take the next step and put more effort into my writing.

Do you have any secret projects that you are just itching to tell us about?

Oh gosh. I do. I really, really do. Usually I try not to say much about what I’m working on until I know that it’s going to stick. I used to be horrible at finishing things so over time I’ve become a little more cautious about saying too much too soon….but….

I’m writing my first ever M/M erotic story. It’s called Break and it’s the fourth story in The Studio Collection. I have a bunch of other secret projects, but they’re still not ready to be discussed in public yet.

Who is your favorite character and why?

Katrina Hoffman in Jazz Hands, the third story in The Studio Collection. I love her fire. She’s a bit mouthy and I sort of adore that about her. I also love Millie Hughes in Measure For Measure. She was handed a rough start, and things go really, really, sideways on her, but she’s a fighter from first to last.

What was the biggest struggle you had when it came to writing any of your books?

Finishing them. I used to be horrible for not finishing things. I’d start a book, get to a hard part, then get distracted by a shiny new plot bunny. I’d open a new file and repeat the cycle all over again. I have since learned to stop not finishing things, but that nagging fear is always at the back of my mind, that one day I’m going to fall back into that habit again.

If you could sit down and have coffee and conversation with one person, who would you choose and what would you talk about?

I grew up reading his books. My mom read them and by the time she finally let me read one when I was eleven, his books had become sort of like the holy grail to me. I loved them. Ate them up. The suspense. The mystery. The pacing. His books are always gripping and thrilling and he managed to yank the rug out from under me so many times. I think I’d just want to talk about normal things with him though, if such a thing exists.

Tell us a little about yourself and your books:

I’m a simple girl who like coffee and fuzzy socks and hates pants. I have three kids, two cats, and a husband and I write love stories (with sex, because sex is fun) because they’re my favorite thing to read.
